Review: G is for Gumshoe (S. Grafton)
So it's been a minute since I've read any Kinsey Millhone mysteries as I've been trying to avoid getting library fines (hint: It's not working out so well) but I borrowed the next 3 in the series and was eager to see how the series continued. I can still definitely say that I really like Kinsey, and I do really enjoy the shorter stories, especially after reading a couple longer ones recently. It's nice to have a break and read a quick mystery!
Also I had to Google this but "gumshoe" = detective. The more you know.
After finally getting to move back into her apartment after the blast that destroyed both her lodgings and her belongings, Kinsey agrees to take what appears to be an open-and-shut missing persons case. But this case is anything but simple, and before she's done Kinsey will have not only have hired a bodyguard for her personal protection, but uncovered a web of lies and deceit so confusing and convoluted that you may just need to take notes.
One thing I love about this series is that just when you think you've established a particular pattern in every book that will hand you the clue to the investigation, you realize that there is no pattern, and you are just grasping at straws. Every time I thought I had figured out what was going on, my theory would be immediately disproven, and the complete opposite would turn out to be true. The complete opposite. And just when I thought I had Kinsey and her personality or actions pinned down, it would turn out that I was, once again, completely off base.
In case you haven't noticed it yet, there's a theme here, and it's not "I'm amazing at predicting plot twists."
Also, I would like to extend a major thank you for providing a mini recap at the beginning of every single book that isn't an in-your-face plot summary, but just a tidbit to get you to remember what went on in the last book or so. Majorly helpful here.
The only major complaint I have with this book is that there are definitely some predictable elements, but I think that's just partially the nature of the series. We know Kinsey won't die or be too seriously injured, since there are a ton more books in this series (although now that I've typed that out she probably will, just to prove me wrong. Again.), and we know that she will probably solve the case, and all of the other elements. But despite that, I really do love this series. It's fun, it's entertaining, and it's a quick read.
Now on to H is for Homicide... which just constantly reminds me of Homicide Hunter.
