Blog Tour: The Dysasters (P.C. and K. Cast)

Surprise! I'm so happy to be part of the blog tour for The Dysasters by P.C. and Kristin Cast, so here's what I have for you! We have a summary of the book, an about the authors, my review of the book, a book trailer AND a sweepstakes where you could win 1 of 20 hardcover copies. It's a long post, but worth it!

Book Summary:

P.C. and Kristin Cast, the #1 New York Times bestselling authors of the House of Night phenomenon, return to the scene with The Dysasters—the first action-packed novel in a new paranormal fantasy series.

Adoptive daughter of a gifted scientist, Foster Stewart doesn’t live a “normal” life, (not that she’d want to). But controlling cloud formations and seeing airwaves aren’t things most eighteen year olds can do.

Small town star quarterback and quintessential dreamy boy next door, Tate “Nighthawk” Taylor has never thought much about his extra abilities. Sure, his night vision comes in handy during games, but who wouldn’t want that extra edge?

From the moment Foster and Tate collide, their worlds spiral and a deadly tornado forces them to work together, fully awakening their not-so-natural ability - the power to control air.

As they each deal with the tragic loss of loved ones, they’re caught by another devastating blow – they are the first in a group of teens genetically manipulated before birth to bond with the elements, and worse… they’re being hunted.

Now, Foster and Tate must fight to control their abilities as they learn of their past, how they came to be, who’s following them, and what tomorrow will bring… more DYSASTERS?

My Review:

When I received an email about being part of the blog tour for The Dysasters, I was very, very excited. The whole fantasy/paranormal corner is my ish, which pretty much anyone can tell by looking at my Goodreads lists as well as my physical bookshelves. I like my main characters to have powers, because it is always interesting to read about the different directions that authors can take these characters. The Dysasters was no exception when it came to this, and I greatly enjoyed seeing the Casts' take on this!

Also, please excuse any typing errors because my poor laptop is currently having a meltdown because apparently having two windows open as well as music playing is too taxing.

I really, really enjoyed the plot of this book. Genetic manipulation is something that I always find extremely interesting in books, especially because of its increasing presence in mainstream media. In other words, I'm a giant science nerd who will never do biology but will admire it from a distance. A very large distance.

ANYWAY.

So yes, big fan of the plot of this book. Elemental powers, check. Evil mad scientist, check. Trans representation, check! Which I didn't know anything about, and I was happy to see because, in my opinion, the more diverse and representative a book can (authentically) be, the better. The plot just sucked me in, and didn't spit me out until the end. Which I am still unhappy about because gee thanks cliffhanger! The plot was my favorite part of this book, second only to G-Pa.

However, I didn't really love the characters themselves. They were a little too tropey (is that a word?), a little too brash, and a little too irritating. The only ones I really liked were Charlotte and G-Pa, and even then Charlotte still got on my nerves a bit. The other issue I had was with the dialogue, which felt a little repetitive and overdramatized.

Overall it was a good book, and I can definitely say that when the second one comes out, I will be making little grabby hands at it just like I was at this one. I want to know what happens, and I want that darn cliffhanger resolved!

3/5 stars
