Review: Becoming the Dragon (A. Sapegin)
This book left me super conflicted inside. On one hand, I was a huge fan of the story, I loved the characters, and the plot itself was super interesting. However, the story itself was a little fragmented and made it difficult for me to get immersed in the story because I just couldn’t find my flow.
Andy has had a strange effect on computers ever since he was struck by lightning, leaving him unable to operate technology in a normal way. When he accidentally stumbles upon the site of a science experiment, he is transported to another world where dragons, orcs, and elves aren’t just stories contained in books. Andy struggles to survive after being captured and forced into slavery, and is forced to make a choice—die as a human, or live as a dragon.
I would say that my favorite part of this book were the characters. I don’t think it’s a secret that I love elves/dragons/all of the characters that don’t exist in real life, and the unique spin that was put on them in this book made it even more fun to read about them. Their personalities were also super fun to read about, especially a certain female elf. It’s generally pretty hard for me to connect to characters and feel invested in their stories, but that was not a problem with this book!
There were lots of good stories throughout this book, my issue was simply how they were connected. All of these sub-plots were super interesting: learning to be an archer, the orc encounter, being tortured and making his choice, etc. I found that I really wanted to know the outcome of these plots, and I really liked some of the creative twists put on them. However, the book jumped from one scene to another, making it more difficult for me to become invested in the story. I wasn’t always sure how we had gotten from point a to point b, which was pretty confusing.
The writing itself seemed a bit choppy, which contributed to my difficulty in loving this book as much as I wanted to. I loved the story, I loved the characters, I just wasn’t a huge fan of how the story was conveyed writing-wise.
